Designing the ideal home – It all starts with the land.
Part two of our series on the Design/Build process
In our last blog post, we told the story of Unique Homes helping a couple solve a difficult real estate problem; the house they were living in was worth LESS than the land on which it was located. Our couple has happily resettled in a more suitable home which was made possible due to the efforts of Unique Homes.
The lot, located in Medfield, presented an opportunity to build a custom home for a young family with three children. Now the fun begins; designing a home that perfectly suits their lifestyle.
At Unique Homes, we see the design process as a collaborative one. While we do not expect our clients to have all the answers, their wants and needs are critical to the process. They have, after all, been thinking about their dream home for a long time. Often they show us photos of desirable home exteriors and/or interior layouts. We listen carefully to discern which design elements they are important. Is it the light in the windows, the layout and design of the kitchen cabinetry, the farmer’s porch?
In each home design, we strive to meld our clients’ vision with the features of the land and solid design principles. Taking into account what our clients want in design, their budget, and the particular lot of land, Unique Homes creates an initial design sketch so that they can actually see what their new home can look like. Working together over several subsequent meetings, we arrive at the final design plan. It’s a process that our clients love.
This family wanted to build a home in Medfield where they could raise their family in a location that afforded both privacy and convenience. Important design elements included an open floor plan but with a “get away” library space, computer/homework area close to the kitchen, good sized mudroom with bench and cubbies for backpacks, walk in pantry, and screened porch. All in a very traditional home with an attached barn style garage!
At Unique Homes, we pride ourselves on building homes that work perfectly with the uniqueness of each piece of land. Not every home design will work on a particular lot. We aspire to design a home that, when built, looks like it has always been there. We listen closely to our clients and strive to “exceed their expectations.”
Our design for this family is complete. Our next step is preparing the land to start the building process. Check back for the next installment in our Design/Build series – Preparing the Land.
